Quilts & Coverlets

How to Choose Quilts and Coverlets for Your Bedroom

Understand the Difference Between a Quilt and a Coverlet

Quilts and coverlets are finished bedding layers that can be used without a separate insert. A quilt typically includes a stitched outer fabric and a layer of filling, while a coverlet is often lighter and designed to add texture or a tailored finish to the bed.

The terms can vary between makers, so review the individual product's construction, weight, dimensions, and materials. Either option may serve as the main bed covering in warmer weather or as an additional layer when more warmth is needed.

Choose the Right Material, Weight, and Size

Cotton quilts can offer breathable softness and comfortable everyday use, while linen brings natural texture and a relaxed appearance. Velvet, Kantha stitching, and quilted surface details can add warmth, color, and a more expressive layer to the room.

Compare the product dimensions with the mattress and bed frame rather than relying only on labels such as queen or king. Consider whether you prefer a tailored fit, additional side coverage, or enough length to fold the quilt back at the head or foot of the bed.

Layer Quilts and Coverlets With the Rest of the Bed

A quilt or coverlet can be used as the main bed covering, folded across the foot of the bed, or layered beneath a duvet for added texture and flexibility. Pair it with shams, sheets, pillows, and throws that share a thoughtful relationship in palette, material, or pattern.

The bedding does not need to come from one matching set. A quieter coverlet can balance a patterned duvet or decorative pillows, while a more expressive quilt may need only a few restrained layers around it.
