How to Choose a Rug That Works for Your Room

Begin With the Room and How You Use It

The right rug depends on where it will live and what the space needs. Living room rugs can help connect a sofa, chairs, and coffee table, while bedroom rugs bring softness underfoot and make the bed feel more grounded. Dining room rugs should provide enough room for chairs to move comfortably, and entryway or runner rugs need materials that can handle frequent foot traffic.

Choose a Size That Feels Proportionate

A rug should relate to the furniture and architecture around it rather than float separately in the room. In a living area, aim for enough coverage to visually connect the main seating pieces. In a bedroom, consider how much of the rug will extend beyond the bed. In a dining room, allow space for chairs to remain on the rug when pulled away from the table.

Use Color and Pattern to Bring the Room Together

A rug can quietly support the room or become one of its most expressive elements. Neutral rugs allow furniture, wallpaper, lighting, and artwork to take the lead, while patterned rugs can introduce movement, color, and personality.

The rug does not need to match every element exactly. A room often feels more collected when the rug relates to the overall palette and materials without repeating them too literally.
