Authentic Gullah Large Sweetgrass Basket
This one-of-a-kind sweetgrass basket is handmade by Michael Smalls, who has devoted his life to the preservation and education of Gullah Geechee culture in the lowcountry. Sweetgrass baskets are traditionally comprised of lowcountry sweetgrass, bulrush, pine needles and palmetto fronds.
The art of weaving sweetgrass baskets has been passed down from generation to generation, through the Gullah community who descended from those West African slaves. Originally designed as a tool for rice production, the sweetgrass basket has evolved to a decorative art. Today, sweetgrass basket weaving remains an integral piece of the Gullah Geechee culture.
